Admission Requirements
If you want to apply to the New Skill Builders Program, you must produce proper identification, valid driver’s license and proof of Chicago residency, access to transportation, and a high school diploma or G.E.D. Once these requirements are met, you must then pass a series of reading, math, and physical exams to gain entry into the program. These requirements mirror those of various apprenticeship programs.
Testing begins with the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), with specific focus given to reading, math, and vocabulary scores. You must score at least 9.0 on the TABE reading and 8.0 on the TABE math portion before proceeding to step two, which is the interview.
The interview portion of the intake process consists of 15 questions administered by experienced construction industry personnel and our staff. Interview questions are structured along a case-study format; applicants are asked questions specifically designed to identify obstacles which may impede their progress through the program – and ultimately- through an apprenticeship or job readiness opportunities.
You must also pass a physical fitness test administered by a physician. The test measures your overall physical health as well as the physical traits required for success within the construction industry – namely, a solid understanding of strength and leverage; dexterity and agility; and the ability to move one’s bodyweight within pre-determined ranges of motion. In addition to being in good health, you must be able to lift objects that weigh 50 pounds, walk and balance themselves on a 7” balance beam, and perform 5 – 10 consecutive pushups.
If you fail any part of the interview process, we will direct to a remedial programs so you can further develop the skills required for a successful application. We will then encourage you to re-apply to at a later time.
