ARE YOU INTERESTED IN A CONSTRUCTION CAREER?

There aren't a lot of minorities and females in the construction industry, as there are many barriers you have to overcome before you can even be considered eligible to apply. The first barrier is that you need to be academically qualified with a high-school diploma or G.E.D. From there you can begin to explore your career options.

But let's be real for a moment . . .sometimes meeting this "bare-bone" requirement isn't enough. In fact, not everyone with a high-school diploma or G.E.D. can gain entry into the construction industry. You have to be able to pass apprenticeship admissions exams (which can be difficult). You have to be able to ace a job interview. You must demonstrate that you have the dedication and work ethic to succeed.

It isn't easy for minorities to meet these requirements, as they often attend some of the worst high schools in the city. They also have to address a set of social and economic issues that make it extremely difficult to complete a course of study.

The New Skill Builders understands the unique issues minorities face as they aspire towards lucrative construction careers. That is why we offer our program... It is designed to not only give you the edge you need to gain admission to apprenticeship programs, but to also give you the tools you need for lifelong success.

How The New Skill Builders Can Help You Enter The Construction Industry. . .

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of the New Skill Builders is to address the employment needs of the construction industry as it applies to city residency requirements and to help city residents build their capacity to succeed and maintain meaningful employment in the construction industry.  This is done through an intensive 13-week skills assessment and skill-building curriculum designed by traditional educators and building trades’ training personnel.

ALUMNI

Here's a bit more about some of our graduates:

Many of our NSB graduates are currently in the Pipe Fitters, Electricians, Plumbers, and Carpentry apprenticeship programs.

Many NSB graduates are also working . . . for example, three NSB grads who are currently working with TVS Mechanical through Local 597 Pipe Fitters installed a boiler at ACE Tech.

A 3rd year Pipe Fitter apprentice excitedly told staff that he does not have a job - he has a career and NSB got him started.

A 3rd year unemployed carpenter apprentice went through a rigorous application process and is now a Field Inspector for CEDA.

Three NSB grads are working on the Illinois Tollway through the Earned Credit Program.
